Our laboratory is taking part in Researchers' Night in Hungary, Hungary's largest series of events promoting science, held annually on the last weekend of September.
On the Trail of Obesity and Diabetes – Science Up Close
Obesity and type 2 diabetes are among the most significant public health problems of our time, affecting the lives of millions of people worldwide. During our program, we’ll present the laboratory animal and cellular models that our researchers use to study the development of obesity and diabetes, as well as their complications. Participants will learn how we model obesity and early-stage diabetes as well as their complications. Participants will learn how we induce obesity and early-stage diabetes in laboratory mice using a high-fat diet, and they will also gain insight into the world of cell culture. During our interactive demonstrations, we’ll explain the methods used in everyday laboratory work, including body weight and blood glucose measurements, as well as drug administration techniques. The goal of the program is to present laboratory work in an accessible way, the fundamental principles of responsible and ethical treatment of laboratory animals, and why animal and cellular models are essential for the development of new therapeutic options. We warmly welcome even our youngest visitors! Preschoolers and elementary school children can learn through playful, interactive activities how diabetes develops, what role a healthy diet and regular exercise play in prevention, as well as what we can do starting in childhood to maintain our own health.

A lecturer from our department won the audience award for a poster at the international biochemistry conference
The international conference of the Hungarian Biochemical Society (BIOCHEMISTRY WITHOUT BORDERS 2026), held from 26 to 28 August
in Debrecen, was a great success. Nearly two hundred researchers from Hungary and abroad attended the event, whilst the scientific programme featured 42 presentations and 96 poster presentations across nine sections. Two poster awards were presented based on votes from the scientific audience.
One of the prestigious awards was won by Enikő Tóth, a lecturer at the Institute of Biochemistry, Faculty of Medicine, University of Szeged. Dr Anikó Keller-Pintér, who heads the research group, also played an active role in the event’s organisational work as a member of the conference’s scientific committee.
